Yesterday we kicked off our seasonal Sunday hikes at Cahaba River Walk in Irondale! A popular spot for kayaking, tubing, and swimming, this short trail runs through Freshwater Land Trust property and will serve as an official access point on the Cahaba Blueway.

This summer, with funding from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF), we completed a streambank stabilization project at a 90 degree bend in the river near the start of the trail, installing gabion baskets to reduce erosion and sedimentation in the river.

And thanks to the leadership of local resident Ginny Brown, the trail now has an expanded parking lot, a split-rail fence, new signs, and new trash receptacles!

We appreciate the residents and City of Irondale’s commitment to taking care of this beautiful place on the Cahaba River. If you haven’t been, we encourage you to visit this fall. Trailhead location: 2171 Grants Mill Road, Birmingham, AL 35210
Our next hike is on Sunday, November 18 at Wildwood Preserve in Homewood.
